Low-Surface-Energy Plastics?
The reason a perfectly good sticker peels off an HDPE bottle in days. Some plastics chemically repel ordinary adhesive — and the fix is chemistry, primer, or a treated surface, not more pressure.
What it is
Some plastics — polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE, both HDPE and LDPE), and untreated polyolefins — are classified as low-surface-energy (LSE). Their non-polar molecular structure repels most standard adhesives, so a label that bonds fine on glass can peel off an LSE bottle within days.
This is a chemistry problem, not a pressure problem. Pressing harder or choosing a thicker face does not solve it; the adhesive simply cannot wet out a surface it is chemically mismatched to.
The three fixes
Specify a high-tack adhesive formulated for LSE plastics — these carry chemistry that bonds to non-polar surfaces where a standard acrylic will not. This is the simplest route and is often enough for squeezable bottles when paired with a conformable face.
Prime the surface — a primer applied to the container before labelling raises its surface energy and creates a compatible bonding surface. Treat the surface — asking the container manufacturer to flame-, corona-, or plasma-treat the plastic during production permanently raises surface energy and gives the most reliable adhesion for high-volume operations.
Where it shows up
Supplement tubs and plastic supplement bottles are frequently HDPE or PP, and a permanent acrylic rated for the specific resin — not a generic “permanent” — is what keeps the label on. Soft PE squeeze tubes and flexible pouches add a second demand: the container deforms, so the face must be conformable (PE film or a highly flexible BOPP) and the adhesive tuned for the soft LSE surface.
BOPP is a common facestock recommendation on these bottles because it is flexible and oil-resistant, but the adhesive under it must still be the LSE-rated grade.

State the resin, always. “Plastic” is not a spec — HDPE, LDPE, and PP behave differently, and the adhesive must be matched to the actual resin. Naming the resin and whether the container is a soft squeeze type is the difference between a label that holds and one that flags.
Contamination compounds LSE. Mould-release agents on freshly moulded parts and any oil film make a hard surface even harder to bond. A quick isopropyl-alcohol wipe before labelling — two wipes for parts fresh from the mould — removes the release agent and materially improves adhesion.
