Problem Nº 09 of 10
§ Field Problem · Nº 09 Tamper-Evident

“I need a seal that
proves it hasn't been opened.

Tamper-evidence is regulatory in pharma and increasingly expected in cosmetics, premium DTC and electronics. The level of evidence — visual void, fragment destruction, NFC — depends on the threat model and the regulator.

The Euphora scale

Levels,
measured not marketed.

Manufacturers love absolute claims. We made a scale because “tamper-evident” means different things in different jobs. Pick the level your job actually requires.

0
None
Standard label. Can be removed and replaced without trace.

Materials at this level

Standard substrates
1
Destructible paper
Tears into pieces if peeled. Discourages casual reuse.

Materials at this level

Frangible paper
2
Void on removal
Leaves “VOID” pattern on substrate when peeled.

Materials at this level

Void label film
3
Honeycomb destruct
Substrate breaks into fragments. Cannot be reassembled.

Materials at this level

Frangible polyester
4
Total destruct
Both label and pattern are destroyed. Tamper attempt fully obvious.

Materials at this level

Specialty void film
5
Forensic / NFC
Embedded chip or covert mark for forensic verification.

Materials at this level

NFC labels, holographic security

Lab Report · Tamper-Evident

Tests every plate had to pass.

01
Peel attempt with bare hands
✓   VOID pattern revealed
Void Film, Frangible, NFC
02
Peel attempt with razor blade
✓   Label fragments
Frangible, NFC
03
Heat-removal attempt (hair-dryer)
✓   VOID still revealed
Void Film (heat-stable), Frangible
04
Freeze-removal attempt (−20 °C, 1 h)
✓   Label destroys on attempt
Frangible, NFC
05
Repaste attempt (peel + re-apply)
✓   Pattern remains on substrate
All three

Field Notes

Questions we
get most weeks.

Q. 01
Are void labels enough for cosmetics tamper-evidence?
For most cosmetics, void labels at Level 2 are sufficient and reasonably priced. For premium / luxury, step up to frangible polyester or NFC.
Q. 02
Can tamper-evident labels be photocopied / counterfeited?
Standard void labels can be visually copied. For brand authentication, specify holographic or NFC labels with covert features.
Q. 03
Will the void pattern survive shipping abrasion?
Void films are designed to survive ordinary handling and only reveal under deliberate peeling. The pattern won’t emerge from incidental abrasion.
Q. 04
What about pharmaceutical regulations?
Pharma regulations (USP, EU GMP) typically require tamper-evidence on primary packaging. Frangible polyester or specialty void film at Level 3+ is standard.
