Inkjet vs. Eco-Solvent

The single most consequential equipment decision a sticker business makes. Cheap and fast vs. durable and wide. Most operators upgrade exactly once — at the wrong moment.

When to pick which

The decision,
by use case.

Pick Inkjet
  • You’re an Etsy seller, journal-maker, or studio running under 500 sheets per day.
  • The work is indoor decoration — laptop stickers, journals, gift packaging, planner sheets.
  • You need fast turnaround — print, dry, peel within a few minutes.
  • Budget for equipment is under $2,000.
  • You’re using pigment ink (not dye) — Epson EcoTank pigment-based models are the sweet spot here.
Pick Eco-Solvent
  • You’re running a print shop, sign shop, or DTC brand at production volume.
  • Output is outdoor or long-life — vehicle wraps, window decals, banners, branded packaging meant to last years.
  • You need wide-format capability — anything over 13″ print width.
  • The substrate is uncoated vinyl, banner material, canvas, or specialty films.
  • Capital expenditure is justified by volume — you’re doing more than 500 sheets/day.

Editor’s verdict

For 95% of Etsy and small-shop sticker work, home inkjet with pigment ink is the right answer — the equipment is affordable, the turnaround is fast, and the durability is adequate for indoor decoration. Eco-solvent is the upgrade path when output crosses production volume, when you need outdoor longevity, or when wide-format becomes the bottleneck. The mistake: spending $15,000 on an eco-solvent for an Etsy hobby, or trying to fulfil 2,000-piece-per-week orders on a desktop Epson.
